I posted last week about my platy who developed a white fungus spot on her tail, which later fell off. To cut a long story short:

I have had her 1 1/2 weeks

She is in a Juwel Rekord 60 with 2 other platies and 3 guppies

The water stats have been excellent until today, except that nitrates are always rather high, comes with the tap water (20-40)

I first (from last Tuesday) took out the carbon filter in the tank and treated her with Interpet Anti-fungus and finrot
(did a 30% water change before I put it in)

no improvement- more of her tail grew white and more fell off; she was perky and lively in herself, though, and eating well

On Saturday night I added salt 1 tablespoon/20 litres

On Sunday night I did a 30 % water change, adding salt in proportion tow ater I took out. I then put the carbon filter back overnight, to clear first medicine.

Monday morning I took out carbon filter and treated tank with Interpet Anti-internal bacteria, as it had been suggested that she probably had internal problems by now.

current state of affairs:

Smudge is still perky and lively and eating well, but the white is spreading on her tail.

There is a slight increase of ammonia (0.25) and of nitrites (0.25). It says on the medicine that this might happen.

I am due to add the second dose of medicine tomorrow morning. Should I do a water change first? I obviously don't want to add to poor Smudge's problems with crappy water.

And if the second dose doesn't work, what should I do then? It feels awful just to sit there waiting for her to get worse.

Can you think of anything, folks?

Fin rot can be bacterial, normally it is external. I would suggest Matacyn or generic EM.

Thanks! More questions coming:

Salt bath- what concentration? How long?

Sorry, that's in the link, isn't it?

What about the water change? (in the tank)

Thanks a lot! I will try the salt bath tomorrow (too tired tonight, I'd probably drop her on the carpet). Sounds scary, though, keeping the fish in until it keels over (as it said in the second link). I'll probably keel over from fright first! What container do you think would be suitable for this experiment? I haven't got a spare tank, so I'll have to improvise. I assume I'll be taking out tank water to put her in?

Yes tank as it's the correct temp, a bucket or large jug, good luck.
