I did a water change on Finneus' tank today and decided to put in some new decorations I had purchased. He seems to like the new setup, as do the 3 shrimp and snail :) They are all out exploring it. I probably have way too many plants in there...but I like how it looks. I'll have to take some of them out when they grow too big...hopefully I'll be able to get a 20 gallon by then and use it for my next fish tank. This is a 2.5 gal tank-I wish I had room to have a 5.5 gal for him.

Here's some pics of it, and of the inhabitants! (Here's some pics I took yesterday of all 3 bettas: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/341032-pics-of-the-bettas/ )

Looks great, but you might want to let a small sized live amazon sword plant float on top, bettas like to rest on them at the surface at night sometimes. Imagine resting on the bottom of the tank at night, your relaxed, and suddenly you have to rush up to the surface for a breath of air, if a plant is on top he can rest on the surface at night and only have to lift his head to breathe. :)

Thanks!!

I'll pick one up on Monday if Petsmart has any :) The whole time I've had him (had a fake floating plant temporarily) he liked to bunker down in a barrel decoration I had in the tank instead. I need to do something with my Java Ferns too...as I recently read that they shouldn't be planted completely in the substrate, but anchored to something with some string instead? I don't want it to die.

All 3 bettas love the Amazon Swords I picked up. Thanks for the idea :)

is that a 2.5 gallon tank from petsmart? whats up with those things, the lids are air tight! what pet expert could have possibly designed that? i have two of them and i have to resort to keeping them lidless because of that ridiculous design.

I keep mine cracked enough to allow for airflow. I have a filter and heater in there as well as a light attached, so it works out well for me. (the wires and clamp elevate the glass). I have the lid caddycornered for airflow. This leaves plenty of cover to keep my bettas from jumping out.

Yes it is from petsmart.

I thought that if a Betta wanted to stay at the top of the water to breathe, it was a sign of illness. My old betta did this for days before he died....?

If a betta is spending all his time at the top of the tank and not otherwise swimming about then it is a sign of illness. One of my bettas is doing that right now :( But generally they like to rest near the top because they breathe from the air and it's less far for them to go. My other betta always sleeps in the vallis at the top of his tank, but when he's awake he swims all over the place.
