Definately do not put cories on just gravel as they will hate this. Cories really need sand. Glad to see you're considering black sand. It looks great!

The advice people are giving you is good. I myself wouldn't get a molly because they are brackish and because they may not show up the best against black substrate. I really sad situation is when you have them in the tank with a black painted background.....yeah...learned the hard way on that one. lol

For a pleco there is the rubberlip (aka bulldog) pleco which is an excellent algae eater....get them small while they are most active. They do not get very large and are VERY peaceful and shy.

As far as angels being in the 55 they will be very happy there....go for it!

In fact if I got angels I would have at least 4 in there.

some people buy around 6 angels and arange before hand to return 4 of them once two of them pair off. Buying two angels is risky because you may end up with two males or two females. I'm not sure what the conspecific (same species) temperament of angels is but if you want them to breed then I'd buy six and arrange to return four of them. Keep in mind there is a small chance you will still have all m or all f but it's not terribly likely.
