Finally My Discus In Their New Home

Maximum size is source depandant. I put recons in askerisks for the dusbin lid sized Heckel, as I myself am sceptical on that one... German bred stock gets a fair bit bigger than your typical asian bred stock however, though the Discus you see in the trade are most likely asian bred in the UK, and hence 6-8" is all you are likely to see unless you go to a specialist Discus show with some German bred stock entered in it...

All the best

My discus i have now are sourced from Asia by my LFS, they dont often have many in but are normally good quality fish.

Started feedin 5 times a day and doing a 30% water change every other day, so will see how they get on, must admit they have grown since they have moved into their new home :)

Just want them to pair off now

The ones in the pictures you posted are 6"? hmmmm.. can you get a picture of them near a ruler? They really dont have the features or shape of a 6" fish.. more like a 2-3" fish..

There is a thread right now on SD with the person who took that picture. That is a 2ft tank in the background. If that discus were 12 inches it would be half the length of the tank. Its probably 8". There is flat out no such thing as a 12" discus and 8" is a VERY rare thing. You should feel super accomplished to get a juvi to grow to 6", it aint easy.

Well he isn't going to be 12 inches long. That Discus looks much taller then longer and when I gauge Discus size I normally go by height, I am pretty sure most people do.

Very true!

Do people measure the body or from tail to tail height wise?

You guys have to be kidding. People measure fish by length not height. Discus are no exception. I dont see why they would be.

Hahah it almost doesn't seem right measuring them length wise for some reason.

I think its due to the shape, there arent that many "disc" shaped fish really.

Well if your discus are the shape discus are supposed to be they would be round, therefor measuring them lengthwise (the correct way) vs height shouldnt yield very different results. Measuring them by height is cheating. There are high finned varieties of discus such as the one in my avatar as well as high bodied and the ugly as sin bulldog varieties, measuing them by height would be like cheating.
