Finally Got Some Cichlids!

I transformed my 55G into a cichlid tank.

Last week I purchased 5 Electric Yellows...... there pretty small, the biggest one is about an 1 inch.

My question is what other cichlids can I get?

The problem is that here, there isn't much to choose from, and if you find some that look cool they dont even have the correct name of the fish at the store, so you dont even know what your buying.

The guy at the pet store told me to get some Frontosas becuase there good for the price and they grow big.
He was selling them for $11.99 each, and there about 1 inch big. But I read on here that Frontosas are not best mixed with Electric Yellows..... and you need a big tank for them aswell.


I dunno but it's hard to trust the people at these pet stores, They were telling me I can mix anything with these Electric Yellows as long as there around the same size......

well cross that lfs off your list

frontosa at 1" can be found for anywhere from $4 to 8 dollars.

since you used the $ I'm assuming your in the USA, where abouts are you? I can help find a good lfs maybe.

also, not ANYTHING can just go together, adult size, aggression, nutrition and water parameters all come into account.



check into some of the Cynotilapia afras, make sure you find OMNIVORES & MILDLY AGGRESSIVE those are 2 key things to look for.

no fronts for the 55 g

snoop around cichlid-forum.com in their library section then go to links and at the bottom is a link to find clubs in your area. (canada too) it's a great resource!!

the best place to go in my opinion for cichlids is bigals
