Finally went out to stock the tank after the fishless cycle with a pretty clear idea about what we wanted - a shoal of harlequins, RTBS, small plec, and a betta. Hoped to add an elephant nose eventually when we could.

Came away with a bit more than we planned ! A bit of a controvertial mix perhaps:

8 Harlequins - wanted more but that was all the lfs had
1 small RTBS 2"
1 smallish male betta - body is about 1"
1 small Black Ghost Knife 3"
1 elephant nose 4-5"

The harlequins are ignored by everything.

Had no intention of looking for the ghost knife when we went to the shop but there he was. Irrisistible. We know he'll need a bigger, widder tank before too long and won't be able to stay with the harlequins once he grows a bit, so now we have a good reason to start thinking about another tank :D Right now he seems very happy, moving between the different pipe caves buit into the cement background during the day and getting very active in the evening after the lights fo out. Fascinating fish to watch.

The RTBS and the betta seem matched in the aggression stakes and seem to be enjoying each others company. The betta periodically tries to chase the shark, but he's clearly not bothered in the slightest since I've seen how fast he can move when he really wants to. Plenty different caves and territories in the tank for everyone. If keeping the betta in the community doesn't work out, we'll set him up on his own. Right now though it looks like he's enjoying the company.

The elephant nose is the fish that's giving me a little concern because I think he's a little on the thin side. Despite the presence of lots of caves, he stays pretty still when the lights are on in the shade of a plant growing on a piece of bogwood. He gets a little more active when the lights go off. I need to find out how much he should be eating and how you make sure all the fish in the tank get a fair share of the food that's added, but I'll post that question elsewhere.

The Black Ghost Knife will eventually eat the Harlequins when it gets bigger. I would take the betta out of there becaue the RTB will get a lot bigger them him. Your not supposed to keep elephant noses and black ghost knifes together unless your have a huge tank. Also wondering what is your tank size?
