It's amazing that no matter how much you pre-wash the play sand it still makes your water really cloudy. So I'm trying to repeatedly siphon off the water and put fresh stuff back in to filter out the cloudiness. Any other suggestions?

Ok cool. I put everything back in the tank...driftwood, plants, etc. figuring I'd do the majority of the sand disruption now while it's all a mess anyway. I can always rearrange my plants later when it's clear and I see how Van Gogh my blind planting turns out.

It takes a little while to clear out but it will be worth it in the end. I do not regret switching to sand at all. The fish seem to enjoy it more and my plants actually have grown faster in sand than the previous gravel substrate.

I stick an old internal filter in for the first few days with just Wilko 79p 'supawool' in it. After 2 days out and bin the wool.

If just using the existing filter make sure you clean it after the water clears as it will have loads and loads of 'dust' and 'particles' in it.

Me too, I had a U4 in my discus set up and the sand made the water really cloudy so I added cotton wool to the inlets and after an hour it was clear. :)

I never thought about doing that as a disposable prefilter. This morning I am finally able to see the back of my tank. I've wondered if I should go ahead and remove the filter elements now, give them a rinse and add them back in. Maybe I'll just take the inlet caps and stick some cotton balls inside.

My U4 wasn't for throwing away lol I used it in the tank but yeah cotton wool or the cotton pads from your LFS work fine. :)
