After medicating a whole tank instead of quarantining the affected fish... I (make that THEY)had to endure a 15 week cycle. You would think I would know better after having a tank for 6 years.
I realized my blunder about 3 days into the meds so I made arrangements to go from a 25 gal with HOB filter to a 55 gal with Cascade 1000 canister as soon as the medication period was over. I was going to upsize anyway because my mother-inlaw asked us to babysit her tank buster of a goldfish for the rest of it's (or her) life.
I could not believe most of the fish could withstand 8ppm and greater reading for such a long time. Several days ago I tested and it was still 8ppm or greater and the very next day I got a reading of 4. The next day it was under 1ppm and today ZERO.
I did not know it would change that radically. I thought it would be a slow process when the readings did start to drop.
Do to the fact that the ammonia did not kill them we tried another method. Instead of using the little 3ml spoon like scooper I instructed the wife to use to add baking soda to the water... A much larger one that is used to scoop Iced Tea mix or powdered lemon aid that is about 4 tablespoons was substituted. I had to do a water change when I got home because the ph went from 6.4 to off the scale on the high side. My wife thinks she triggered the sudden drop in HN3 with her alkaline water mishap.
Sorry for the long post and poor grammer but I had to share the experience and excitement. PLEASE do not take my fish away. I promise to take better care in the future.
