I've pretty much got my tank all planned out
it's a trigon 190 (litres) with live plants.

So far I've sorted out the following fish

livebearers - mollies and platies
small shoaling - cardinal and rummy nose tetras
bottom dwellers - cory's

plus probably some otocinclus and maybe a plec

I'm looking for a larger fish to finish things off
Ideally I'd have a few silver dollars - but of course they would eat the plants
I'm considering gourami's, but really only because I can't think of anything else

it must be something of reasonable size (but that won't get too big)
suitable with the above fish (and not too keen on eating baby mollies)
probably not too active
middle dweller
won't eat plants
not horribly expensive!

if anyone has any suggestions please let me know

The only thing I can think of is Discus. They are not that expensive if you know where to look, and they are a lot hardier than cardinal tetras.

EDIT although if you don't wanna bother with raising the temp all the time then don't do it.

I wouldn't recommend discus at all out of the blue like that and for most they are expensive.

How about some rainbow fish or even angels? If your tank is planted then baby mollies would be grand.

I quite like rainbowfish, but haven't seen any larger ones that I like (I like the praecox and threadfins), also don't they tend to be more shoal fish and dart around a lot?
If there is a nice large one that I can keep just a few of, I would certainly consider it.

I don't really fancy discus - for one thing they would be too big for my tank with everything else in it IMO.

As for pearl gourami (they are a fairly large gourami aren't they?), as I said I will have gourami's if I can't find a suitable alternative.
I do quite like the silver gourami's - ?moonlight? possibly.

Yeah i agree with david go for a discus.
Discus are not meant to be kept alone and fraservet has already said that they don't want discus and rightly said that their tank would not be large enough.

:dunno:

Boesmani rainbows are quite large, mine is 4" at least without tail and very active. :)

190 litres is large enough for discus... and I never said just get one.

Discus are very nice fish indeed, but they are hard to keep I thought? Also, I think my 30 gallon tank is too small for them. I would love to try a pair of babies in my tank. I'm not sure if it will be a good idea.

Trust me, they are not as hard as you think. Much easier than rummynoses or even cardinals, or any of the other sensitive tetras out there. My little guy survived the aftereffects of my ich infestation and my nitrite spike and is thriving.

Oh cool...So, can my 30 USA gallon (tall) keep two Discus?

When I said discus would be too large for my tank, I meant because of the other fish/stocking levels rather than tank size.

Cheese - I don't really want a very active fish, just something that will float around looking nice, so perhaps rainbows are out.

definately considering moonlight gourami's unless anyone has a better idea?
