Im new to fish aquariums I have had my twenty gallon take running about 2 weeks now. I had gotten a fancy guppy from the fish store and one of them had fin rot, i thought it was just nipping until two days of being in my tank i started to notice it on another one of the guppy's now.(has transfered to few others) I have done a PWC 25% and put the dosage amount of pimafix and melafix along with my aquaen water conditioner, as well as removing the carbon cartridge from the filter. I was told do about 10% PWC every 2-3 days or so due to the filter cartridge being removed, and should the light be turned off during the week im treating the tank. Anything that im missing

Okay first things first.

It is likely your tank is not cycled. This means your tank does not have the appropriate bacteria to process the ammonia (and subsequent nitrite) that will be produced by your fish. If ammonia and nitrite are present they will kill your fish. So before you do anything else I highly advise you to read the Beginner's Resources in the New Freshwater Tank section, especially topics such as cycling and fish-in cycling. Here is the link

Next, any good fishkeeper is a water expert. The fish stores want to sell you stuff and they employ people that they train in selling not good fishkeeping practices. So you absolutely need a good test kit. We all prefer liquid based test kits and tend to recommend the API master test kit brand. You can then test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc yourself. This is essential if you want to post here. Most problems in tanks are caused by water chemistry problems and we need those stats immediately to help. AGAIN BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN MAKE RIGHT NOW.

Now when medicating a tank, we removed the carbon filter piece only... in fact most of us don't use the carbon piece at all unless we are removing medications (its primary use). Did you remove all of your filter inserts? If so put the others back. and read the beginners resources above and start following the New Freshwater Tank section threads.

This needs to all be sorted out before medicating your fish. Sorry for the news. It is that important.
