well it seems like we rescued Stripe the lush blue colour on his tail has gone see through and starting to tear we noticed this 3 days ago

so we started treating him for fin rot and he seems to of picked up a hell of a lot ut my question is this

how long will it take to clear and how can we tell once its gone??

thanks in advance everyone

I've only treated one case of fin rot, but I imagine the length of time would depend a lot on the severity of the fin rot. My betta had fin rot when I got him, I treated him with just melafix (and very clean water) and it took maybe two weeks. It's nearly a year later now and his fins are still re-growing.

i dont think much of his tail has been 'eaten away'

been changing his water each nighthes looking a lot better hes redder than before

will the see through bits just drop off from his tail and just regrow? i think we have caught it quite early because it doesnt look to bad

I think the clear bits are actually regrowth rather than rot, so that's a good thing. (tears however are a sign that he still has some finrot). When my betta had finrot his fins were edged with black (about 2mm of black). When they were regrowing they were transparent, then turqiouse (for some strange reasons) then eventually turned red like the rest of him.

How long have you had him? I think my betta's finrot was purely down to the dirty water he was kept in at the lfs. The water in the bag he came was at 4ppm of ammonia. Once he lots of lovely clean water his fins cleared right up.

Are you using meds at the moment? what type?

Here's a pic of my betta when he had finrot. The black arrow shows the transparent/turquiose regrowth, the blue arrow shows the blackened bit which is finrot.

This shows the black where the finrot was more clearly

And here he is now all healed

His fins are still regrowing and have come back a bit straggly, but they are definitely longer than when I got him in October 2006.
