This is similar to the recent post about guppies with fin rot...

Over the past few days, I have noticed that one of my red platty's tail fin is slowlt eroding away!!! I'm new to the hobby so this is my first case of something like this.

I also noticed what looked to be a little goopy light blue slime on his/her tail. He was in a tank with two very active zebra danios. Maybe they nipped away at his tail. Luckily, I was breaking in a new 10 gallon (so much for my fishless cycling). Mr Red Platty is now on his own but I fear he doesn't have much longer to live.

What should I buy for his tail?

The tank has only been up for like a week. The water was treated with dechlorinator and the PH is around 7.5.

Finally --> the poor guy has stopped eating.

What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?
You could try treating with Melafix which is a medication for finrot.

I went out and purchased Melafix tonight and a salt product the shop owner recommended. The tail is about 3/5 gone now so I hope the fish can still be saved. Thanks for your response today!

I'll get readings tonight but I suspect all levels are really really low if even there at all. The tank has been up for about 1 week.

thanks again

9:11pm and he is sticking near the bottom of the tank now... he is keeping his tail up a little higher than his front. I guess this helps him stay balanced considering most of his tail is gone. Sad night --- might be my first tropical fish loss. Sucks.

That sounds bad, hope he hangs on, if he does get Interpets No.8 Antifungus & Finrot. I used the 2 together (Mellafix and No.8) recently and it stopped me loosing a male guppy. It was slow going though, it took over 2 weeks to clear it but it's worth it if you can save him. Best of luck. It's always good to have these items in stock so you can catch things early.

Best of luck!

Sad day... Lost my first fish. I think I was too late to react with the right treatment. At least I have the products I need now in case something like this happens again.

The question I have now is ... what do I do with the tank the fish died in? The tank has only been up for like 10 days now. Should I empty it and start over? Can fin rot be passed to any fish I put in there???

Sory for your loss bud, it's a sad day alright but you just have to learn from these things and move on.
I wouldn't worry about fin rot remaining in the tank your were cycling, if you've added the Interpet product.

If I were you I'd oncentrate on getting the fishless cycling in your new tank back on track and complete.
Then it's back on the bike again.

Good advice -- Thanks!!!
