We've got a 28L aquarium stocked with 6 Black Neon Tetras. About a week ago we noticed that one of the tetra's tail fins had a split in it and its dorsal fin had a very slight malformity.
We've been keeping an eye on it and there have been no changes in this particular fish. We did notice this morning that a separate fish now has a small part of its upper tail fin missing. Like a millimete or so has just vanished.
In the two fish mentioned there does not appear to be any fraying from the edges of the fins just the split and (now) missing fin part. There doesn't appear to be any haemoraging or white stuff on the fins either. The remainder of the fins and even in the fins with splits in appear to have defined edges (where there is no split).
It may be worth noting that one of the 6 tetras is quite a bit larger than the rest and at times pushes her weight around so maybe its nipping but i didn't think tetras nipped each other.
I haven't tested the water parameters in a week but they were:
Amonia 0
Nitirite < 0.1
Nitrate 30
I know the nitrate is a little high but we've just bought a nitrate/ite filter to deal with our poor quaility tap water and plan to perform the first water change with filter water today.
So guys and gals does this sound like finrot?
From what I've read I think its not and don't want to have to medicate the tank if I'm not sure.
