I have just noticed that one of our guppies has a bit missing from her tail.

Is this fin rot (if so, what do I do) or is it a case of being 'nipped' by one of her tank mates?

Her tank mates are
2 male guppies
5 female guppies
5 black mollies (male + female)
1 glass catfish
2 amano shrimp
edit: 5 neon tetras. forgot about them!

Any thoughts?

Martin

It's a Juwel Rekord 70, not the 260 listed in my sig.

Doesn't really matter what the problem is, with that amount of damage, treated pro-actively is wise. Go buy a combination finrot-fungus cure (e.g., Interpet #8 or eSHa 2000) and use it at once. At the very least, it will prevent fungus setting in, but it will also nip in the bud any existing infections.

Keeping your guppies in fairly brackish water will have the same effect, but this will depend on the tankmates. If your guppies are on their own or with mollies, then raising the salinity to 25% seawater will do the trick nicely. Obviously, if you neons, catfish, etc., this isn't an option. Alternatively, dipping the fish daily in 100% seawater for 10-30 minutes will also work well to kill off external infections. I've discussed the methods for saltwater dips elsewhere, but you'll find similar details in aquarium fish health books.

Cheers,

Neale

Thanks for the help.

This has only happened recently - when I last saw the fish (yesterday I think, if not, the day before), everything was fine.

I'll get it sorted tomorrow.

Thanks,

Martin
