Fin Rot Or Fin Damage?

Is there a way of telling fin rot apart from fin damage? Will the Primafix mentioned on a previous thread deal with both? And for my own peace of mind could I just confirm again that this stuff is reef-safe?

Primafix is reef safe. It will speed up the healing process of either ailment however cannot kill the bacteria that causes fin rot.
