Fin Rot On My Beta's Tail! Help!

I'd rather not treat with 3 medications of 1 or 2 will do. I have the Maracyn-Two. I will see if I can get the Maracyn also. Will the ich medication (aweful green stuff) really be efficient in addition to these? Or will it just kill my loaches? ;)

Do you think I need to treat the whole tank for fin rot or just the beta? I don't know how contageous this stuff is.

I read that same site just today before you posted. I thought the information was generally good, but the writer did not make any distinction between keeping salt in an aquarium with loaches and without, so I was a bit hesitant to take his/her other advice. If they did not take loaches into account when keeping salt in the aquarium, perhaps they did not take loaches into account when giving other advice?

Don't worry about getting too much salt because it won't hurt a thing.

It could hurt my loaches! :( :(

*nods* I do not have clown loaches, but 1 khuli loach, 1 hillstream loach (hong kong plecostomas) and 2 loaches that were sold as khuli's but are something else that looks similar. I realize the skinny loaches have some small scales but I have heard so many warnings against using salt with them, and I would hate for their face to be damaged if they do not have scales there. I also do not know if the hillstream loach has scales. :(

ok sorry thought they were clown loaches, no salt then.
Good luck.

I would for the main tank stick with doing more water changes in a week. So if you do one a week at 20% then change it to twice a week for a month to keep the water bacteria down to a minimum.

It just looks like this is the only fish to get a secondary infection so personally I would treat the betta on its own with higher temps , salt and the maracyn.
With the rot already in his body I wouldnt hold out much hope but just do what you can for him/her.

He's such a beautiful fish too. I hope he pulls through. Is it normal for fin rot to go from a fin to the body in less than 48 hours? It seems awfully fast. I will keep you guys updated on if he survives. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I have really enjoyed having him in my tank! :(

Don't use Melafix on your betta if you were thinking about it. I saw someone mention that they had used it for their own guppies.. but from what I understand and have read about it. Melafix is NOT good to use for fish that have the labyrinth organ such as bettas.
I'm sure there are other medications that will do the same thing without harming him.

Utter rubbish im afraid, Melaix is one thing i will use on Betta and any other fish, infact its something i add to all my tanks bi-weekly just as a precaution.

Only repeating things I've read from folks who know their stuff about bettas and they've had problems with using it on them.. *shrugs* I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Methylene Blue is a good parasite med which is ok for bettas. Watch it tho cos it stained my whole tank blue

Well, as predicted, the beta did not survive :(

Also one of my loaches died without warning.

I am going to treat the whole tank with Maracyn Two and Maracyn. Wish me luck. Everyone else looks ok but they don't seem to show symptoms until it's too late :(
