hey guys thanks in advance for your help,

i am new to this forum but need some advice, i had a coldwater tank with several fish in that all died overnight for various reasons (fin rot, untreated water, not oxygen etc) basicially i dint research properly

we have 4 fish die except one, an orfe (think that is how you spell it)
i have learned that this is a pond fish and will grow very big so have got a bigger tank and done everything properly but i i put this orfe into my new tank will it effect any new fish i add to the tank as it came from a tank with poor water and fin rot

thanks again
Luke

It won't affect any other fish, no.

I would really very strongly suggest that you find someone with a pond to take the orfe for you; they are not tank fish at all. How big is the new tank?

There are some great articles on cycling tanks and the nitrogen cycle in the beginner's resource centre (link is in my sig).

Do ask any more questions you might have, oh, and welcome to the forum :hi:

Thanks for your quick reply fluttermoth! its 60l which is about 13 gallons

Yeah; that's in no way big enough I'm afraid; orfe can grow to a foot long easily.

ok kind of expected that, whats best though as i really dont think i know anyone with a pond

You could ask in your local shops or put a card up, or there's a classifed section on this forum; or there's a site called 'Aquarist Classified' that you can advertise it on (it doesn't cost anything).

I'm sure you'll find someone to take it; it really would be best for the fish.

ok thanks so uch for your help! until we can find it a home is it best to keep it in the bigger of our two tanks or just keep it where it is

The bigger tank would be best as fish can become stunted quite easily.

How long have you had the fish? Is the tank it's in now cycled?

have had the fish about 3 weeks or so kept in a tank with no filter or anything since the others died, went to my local fish shop and they advised me what to do so as far as they told me the tank is now cycled

Well, a tank with no filter can't be cycled, as technically it's the filter that cycles.

You'll need to be doing 50% water changes every day, without fail or the fish will die of ammonia poisoning. You must get a filter in there ASAP and see if the shop can give you some mature (cycled) filter media (sponges or ceramic rings; even gravel would help) as they'll contain the bacteria you need to keep the ammonia down.

What size is the tank that the fish is in now?

it as been kept in a small tank with no filter, he new tank is much larger and has a filter and has been cycled poperly

Oh, ok; that's great then; I was panicing there!

no need to panic i realised something was wrong so went to the fish shop and got some new set up advice and all is sorted just need it to grow a little bigger then we have found a pond for it to live in

You don't need to wait for it to grow; the sooner you can find the pond the better! Then you can have some nice (little!) fish in your 60l :D
