ive had my male betta for a week now and today i noticed itsfins have started to rot, whats usually the cause of tis i do a 50% water change every week to kep th tank clean.
i really want to get him better as it took me a long time to source a white betta in my area

any help would be appreciated

Fin rot is usually caused by poor water quality.
Melafix is a common medication used by fish keepers around here, and it is safe for cycled tanks and natural.
How bad is it? Did you just notice it, or is it already progressing up the tail?
You have to be careful, because finrot can move up the tail and start actually working its way up the body.
You can find more information here:

Or you can do a forum search (you'll find TONS of threads on this topic), or a google search. You'll have to keep your little guy's water very clean.

i noticed the fin rot yesterday after i did quite a big water change about 50%, however when i beought him from the shop he wasnt in good water quality. i checked the nitrate and ammonia on the water that the fish was in when the shop gave him to me and the ammonia was over 5.0 mg per litre and the nitrate was over 100 mg per litre , and when i intorduced him to my tank there was zero ammonia and little nitrate seems odd. ive got 2 male bettas one which i had in a smallish tank as im waiting for it new tank and its fins are fine, so ive swapped them over and im going to use it as a hospital tank for it.

the fins do seem to have got a little worse over night and he seems to like to sit between the glass and thermometer

Ack! The poor little guy! Those ammonia and nitrate levels could easily be the cause of this fin rot- not to mention any number of other diseases. The quicker you catch it and start treating for it the better.
It's good that your tank has 0 ammonia. As long as the nitrates don't get up near 50 ppl, it should be fine. (I prefer somewhere around 20, because nitrates can inhibit the blood's ability to process oxygen.)
Remember to remove any carbon in the filter if you have one before you start medicating, as carbon will negate any effects the meds will have.
Fin rot can spread really fast, so you've got to start medicating asap.
Let us know how it goes. Oh, and before I forget, Jungle Fungus Eliminator is another product that comes highly recommended around here.

Edit: Here is another link that might help you.
