My fin rot cory isnt doing so well - the medication has been in the tank for 5 days now, and he seems to be getting worse. Hes gone almost grey, seems to be shrinking, and he has a red spot on the side of his belly now. Do you think he has an internal infection now/bleeding? Would it be for the best to kill him or to keep trying with these meds? He's listless, always on the bottom and not swimming, and not eating either.

have you being doing regular water changes whilst treating with meds?

no - i did one water change yesterday coz there was a bit of ammonia in the water, and topped up with the appropriate amount of meds. do i need to do more then?

one of the best treatments for any problem is plenty of fresh water.

do you know why there was ammonia present in the water? is the tank cycled?

have you been over feeding? maybe did too much of a substrate clean disturbing it too much.....? added any new fish recently?

Sometimes the meds can kill bacteria in the tank, hence ammonia being present. Keep the water clean. What are you treating with? I'm currently treating a catfish with a nasty bacterial infection and she is improving a little every day, finrot can be a secondary infection and not the main cause. Am medicating past the suggested time (she's in a hospital tank) and doing water changes every other day and using amquel + as the tank has no filter. As she is eating next to nothing tank params are good. The combination of constantly clean water and meds is allowing her to get better when she appeared to be at deaths door just over a week ago. best of luck with your cory.

Not been overfeeding (though i did at first  ) Quite possibly could be too much of a clean - i always clean the gravel thoroughly - is that a bad thing then? no new fish in the last month

im treating with Interpret anti-fungus and fin rot - is that ok? will be testing again shortly, and doing another water change if necessary.

That shouldn't affect your filter at any rate. Keep an eye on the water quality and change as needed. Any missing fish? If you do a large water change you can re-dose the med. The other option is to examine your fish for any other symptoms and see if an underlying cause needs treating.
If you did an extensive gravel clean you may have done two things.
1)Killed off beneficial bacteria living in the gravel, leading to a small cycle situation.
2)Stirred up trapped gases under the gravel, leading to a degredation in the water quality.

ok nitrites & ammonia are at 0 now :D nitrates are at 2.5 now - better! nope no missing fish recently. i guess whatever it was (maybe a small cycle like you say) has steadied itself now  maybe i'll not go so crazy on the cleaning next time

do you think i should still do another water change tonight?

If readings remain as they are, no. Check readings in the morning to check they are still the same. If they rise, change, if they remain the same, do not. Just keep checking (I know those tests aren't cheap either, but worth doing). Maybe the filter has caught up but watch params like a hawk.
