I have a pair of convicts in a 30 gal that are breeding. The filter i use always sucks the fry up and i have to go in and save them. I tried putting cloth over the nozzle of the filter, but the filter gets clogged and tank gets dirty. I wanted to get one or two large sponge filters. Are there any that can support the bio load of my fish? I needed another filter for one of my other tanks anyway, so i would just put my exsiting filter on that tank. I could take some bio stuff from my filter now and put it with the sponge filter. What are some good brand sponge filters?

If you don't mind internal filters, the Fluval + range are good. I use them in both my tanks and find them extremely effective. They are also reasonably priced, you can adjust the flow and they have an air intake to increase the oxygen levels, simple and straightforward. Because of the design, you should have no problem with fry getting sucked in either.

If you're looking for an air powered sponge filter any will do - brand really doesn't matter. Go with a strong air pump for most effect and it's amazing how effective these simple filters will work. A single sponge, will be handle a larger bio-load then your convicts can generate, and they're excellent for fine partical filtration too.
