I use an external canister too - easy to maintain with loads of media. I only clean mine once every 3 or 4 months.

Undergravel are not good for plants generally as the action of the water flowing past the roots flushes essential nutrients. Generally the pea-gravel commonly used is unsuitable to as the grain size is too big. 1 - 3mm grain size is ideal for plants.

The filter shouldn't agitate the surface too much either as it drives off CO2.

kewl i love to hear about peoples setups im gunna start mine on friday i cant wait

and jim i no wut u mean my dad has a big talk and talks fish like that
lol

what is a sump. I've been wondering this for a while. sorry to steal you thread.

a sump is basicly another tank used just as a filter the water goes from the display to the sump gets cleaned up then goes back into the display tank

and its ok i dont mind straying from the original question a little

are there benefits to doing this? Does it increase stocking? Is it kinda like what wallmart has set up where all there tanks are connected. Except the sump tank doesn't have fish in it?

It increases my stocking levels as i have more surface area, i can hide all my equipment in there to, filter, heater, CO2, pH monitor and it gives me more water to play with, so if there is a power cut etc it takes longer for a larger amount of water to cool or water perameters to change because of the larger volume :D

We have
3 tank internal power filter - all less than 20 gallon
1 20 gallon with trickle filter
1 40 gallon internal power filter and a trickle filter
1 40 gallon internal power filter and sponge filter
3 tank less than 10 gallon on "5 minute sponge filter"

So my answer would be none of the above
all have real plants which are doing well to excellent
