As many as possible, George I believe recommends 5, I run a 700lph Eheim on my 10 gallon.

Don't take for granted the importance of circulation, it is CRUCIAL to your tanks health.
until I swapped my filter I used to get every kind of algae imaginably and my growth rates where pitiful, no with more turn over, better circulation and larger media area everything has picked up and I'm left trying to rid just one algae, clado.

Also the rating on the filter will almost certainly be less than it actually runs at so its always best to over, over compensate. If you can afford it, get the next model up of whatever you are looking at
