I have recently inherited a tank. I have added lots more fish and most r doing okay. I have worked out that the tank has an under gravel filter with a power head. There is no other source of filtration. I am wondering wether i should consider investing in a second filter. And if so i dont really know what would be best. Any information would be gladly recieved.

Cheers.

What size is the tank? If it's a smaller tank (40 US gallons or less) I'd recommend getting a Hang on Back filter because they aren't too expensive and easy to maintain. I run two HoB's (a 30G and 40G) on my 28 gallon tank.

UGFs (under gravel filters) are kind of a PITA to maintain, because over time the filter can suck little bits of stuff under the plate and clog it up. This can eventually result in "dead spots" that allow anaerobic gas pockets to form. Make sure to always gravel vac very well if you continue to use the UGF.
