Hey everybody,

I just got a couple of equips for my 20g and I'm still unsure if they are a little too strong for my tank.

Currently, this tank is running only an UG filter. It's been cycled for about three months now so I know everything is going okay with that. But my questions are regarding the stuff I got today.

1) I didn't want to rip out the ug filter since it was such a process arranging everything the way I wanted it to be - so, I decided to upgrade the air pump I was running on it. The pump I got was the Tetra Whisper pump rated for 30-60g. The reason I went with this size is because the substrate starts at about 3 inches and goes up to about 6 6-.5 inches in the back(on one side). I thought that the thickness was too much so in turn thought, the stronger pump would work better for it...... all of my tiger barbs seem okay and all, but the uplift tubes seem to be almost pushing debris through more after I switched to the higher pump.... (sorry for that ramble, I'm terrible at explaining  )

2) Since this tank is only running an ug filter, I decided to purchase a 3 in 1 H.O.B filter to help w/ mech. & chem filtration. Nothing fancy, just something supplemental. It's made by Aqua Tech and rated for 10 -20 g. It's generally sold as the filter from the starter tanks at wal-mart. since I had this same filter on my 10g, I thought it worked well.

Now assuming I'm just being paranoid here, everything may be fine. BuT ... with this being said, is this air pump & filter together too much for this tank?

Thanks in advance,

depends what fish you've got in the tank, some hate flow some like it.

are they being blasted round the tank by the flow? if not and they're not fish who hate current then you should be fine.

You can never over filter.....

you may want to read some of the opinions expressed about UGF`s here
I note yo have barbs in there they should be fine with plenty of flow

Thanks for the quick response, Miss Wiggle :D

The fish aren't being blown around in the water that I can tell. Actually, within the past hour they seem to be more active than usual.

Not sure what that means, but it doesn't appear negative.

I do have three cherry barbs that explore everywhere and seems like when they sit still, it takes about a second for them to adjust, but again, they remain still after that initial first second. Could it be they're just adjusting to the change in aeration? my tiger barbs seem fine (all of these fish are still juvenile judging by there size).

I'll go to bed for the night(morning?) and see how everything is going when I wake up before I go to work....

Hopefully none of them are giving me the finger and cursing at me when I check it out :p
