Aaron recommended that I get rid of the carbon in my filtration, something I have heard from many plant keepers thus far. I don't see being able to use any other media in the Whisper hang on filter I am using. My filtration consists of a Fluval 305 Canister filter, the Whisper 30 hang on filter, and a Fluval 3 internal/submersible filter. Should I just get rid of the Whisper 30 at this point? Will it really make a difference if I DO decide to keep it on??? To me, the Fluval 305 and Fluval 3 should be adequate. The 305 is for tanks up to 70 gallons, and the 3 is for tanks up to 30 I believe. I have 55 gallons, planted heavily, stocked the same.

I can pack the Whisper away with the Top Fin 50, using them for quarantine or small tanks in the future. That would give me two small tanks, and I saved the stock lighting, one for each, when I bought my new fixture. I can see this hobby getting out of hand quickly....lol...I am addicted. I picture having this huge walk in closet, spare, untility room, or basement area in my new house, with strong shelving units running up the whole two side walls....filled with fish tanks. In between, on the middle wall, I can store my wine...lol. Drinking vino and watchiing the fishes....aaaahhhh.

The jury is still out on carbon filtration in planted tanks, with many considering the whole "it removes nutrients" as been a myth (substrates like those made by Tropica definitely do remove nutrients, but you don't see people flapping about this do you? No, because over time they release these back and are so useful. I actually use activated carbon in 2 of my tanks as part of the substrate to good effect.). Maintaining carbon filtration however is quite expensive to do, as it needs replacing regularly, for little 'reward' and is only really needed to remove medications or colour from the water. I'd be far more concerned about the agitation from a hang on allowing too much CO2 to be released from the water column to be honest.

How big is that tank to have so much filteration. I would just go with the internal filter to give some water movement.
