Okay well I been searching around and I am trying to set up my tank for my betta fish. I am going to get a 10 gallon tank and get a heater and a filter but I am not sure what type of filter to get. People say sponge but I dont know how to tell if its a spone filter.

Thanks

sponge filters are just that, a cut of sponge where the good bacteria gets in and breaks down the ammonia and nitrites to nitrates...
these filters only filter out the chemicals in the water...i would go with a HOB (hang on back) external filter because it will also grab little floaters near by...maybe if youre only going to have one betta in the tank then the sponge filter would be ok...you can get them very cheap...the one i had for my 10 gallon (i was using it for breeding) was maybe $6

here is one ^^^

you need an air pump tho, where as with a HOB filter you do not...

does petco or petsmart offer any good filters?

their filters do their job...i hardly ever go to either of these places because they seem to charge a lot...im guessing youre in the US tho...if you can look on the internet for a fish only pet store...they would be able to give you way better advice than petco/smart...tho they still do want your money...i think petco/smart have a lot of tetra tec stuff, which isn't bad, you could use on of those...

i have this one (EX 30) and it works great...the smallest one would be fine for you

i actually like the wallmart wisper brand, i use the intank 10 gal for my 10 gal, i dont use the cartridges they come with thought i use porocline bits and bio sponge and fine filter polishing pads, layered just soo the current isnt too stroung,, bettas dont like rough water. and theyre cheep

i was hoping someone with some betta experience would answer this...i have never kept them so i was trying to explain the difference in filters...

hmmmmmm... well i kept bettas for alomst 2 years now and have had many succesfull spawns, althought i dont have many now only 3 males, my sister has the rest of my females due to me moving to a new apartment, though in fact all the fish i own now are of my own breeding lines.......

so i do have .. some .. experence with bettas

the best answer isnt always the most expensive
