Does anyone know if filters can give off heat and heat the water? My 6g tank seems to stay around 29-30 degrees and wont go any lower. Even during the night when the light is off, it'll still be around 29 in the morning. I dunno what else could heat up the water. I've never seen the light come on on the heater.

what lights have you got? the flourescent tubes will give off quite a large amount of heat, in a 6g that will heat up pretty fast. I was struggling with this in my 8g, I now only put the light on for an hr in the morning then it's off all day, then on again when I get home for a few hrs in the evening, the temp has dropped to about 26. I'm sure the filter would give off some heat but I doubt if it's much. Maybe the thermostat on your heater is bust, try taking it out and putting it and a thermometer in a cold bucket of water and monitoring the temp, if it keeps going up past what it's set to them it's probably broken.

It does have a flourescent bulb in the hood, but it's off all night and still the temperature doesnt seem to drop much. I agree, it does give off a lot of heat though.
I unplugged the heater for a few hours whilst keeping an eye on the temperature - it didnt change. It's also a brand new heater so hopefully it shouldnt have a problem.

Simply - yes - assuming your filter is internal.

If you were to run your filter for a few minutes with the water level too low - not recommended so dont do this at home kids - you'd feel how hot it got without the water surrounding it to conduct the heat away.

Hmm bummer :/
At the moment i'm running 2 filters in the tank, i'll see what happens when i remove the biggest one in about a week. Hopefully it'll go down. If it doesnt maybe i'll look at getting a HOB, or maybe making my own small external filter :D

What is the temp of the room it's in? It's not impossible that the room temp is around 29 so you wouldn't be able to keep it lower than that.

Sure, every filter is a machine, and no machine is 100% efficient. That is, no machine can turn 100% of the energy from electricity into machine work. This energy has to go somewhere... and the overwhelming amount of that waste energy goes into heat.

we use one internal filter and it does get hot
we have to keep it very clean all the time to minimize wasting energy into heat otherwise the water can go up to almost 90!
