Now, I understand that peat will soften my water and slightly lower my PH. I placed it in one section, wrapped in a media bag, in my fluval 305. My question is, how does having traces of peat in the the water benefit my plants??? I know it won't benefit my snails, but it does open the door for new species of fish to be options in my tank (I can better keep Rams and potentially try Cardinals). But, I have read that plants like peat filtration??? It's almost talked about as a fert, but is the benefit just limited to softening the water, in terms of plants? If it just has to do with hardness, I imagine it depends on the plant as to what benefit it will derive from a little peat....

If the KH isn't so high then it can't buffer the water as well, meaning the peat will decrease the pH a bit. Not that fish/plants really need a change in pH (expect some species, even then it's not 100%).
I don't understand how peat can lower the general hardness (GH) unless the peat can somehow exchange calcium for sodium ions and hang on to them.
I wouldn't use peat, I really don't see the point.
