alright all,

was running my doctor tank for a week (to keep loach in before i took back to lfs) and used water from large tank, with filter sponge.

question - i have put the sponge into my big tank will it keep the bacteria alive for the next tank?

As long as there is a good flow of water of the filter sponge, ie in the filter, or infront of the filter outlet.

HTH

Exactly - the bacteria needs to be 'fed' with the nasties in your water, and simply sitting in the tank won't be enough. That's why it needs a flow of water carrying the 'food'......

so if just sitting in water it will die?

ok so i need to move it where water is flowing, hmmm dunno where

what about putting on bottom with airstone under to create flow? will it work?

Hang on a minute - can we just rewind a little bit?

What was this filter media we're talking about sitting in? Wasn't it part of a filter at some earlier stage in its life?

The easiest thing will probably be to run that filter in parallel in your tank. That way you get the benefit of a bit of extra filtration (never a bad thing), together with the filter media staying matured.

That's what I've done in the past anyway....
