I have recently removed the internal filter from my tank, I removed the under gravel filter and put in an internal, I only keep Guppies, when I did this it seemed that babies were no longer being produced and on cleaning the filter it was full of snail shells.
Was the filter sucking in the babies and snails? I have an external filter (from bootsale) not set up, but will I have the same problem? My air pump has now packed up and I have no air, no filtration. The fish all seem very happy! But what do I need to do? Advice much appreciated.

My tank is 2.5' x 1.5' x 1' and is planted with java ferns, with about 25-30 guppies.

It could have been yeah i guess. I'd doubt it was sucking in snails, is there any chance the snails died then the shells got sucked in? Or the snails might've been feeding on the baby guppies that got sucked in.

you can try put womens tights over the filter, this should help.
