This may sound like an odd question, but I have a 55g setup that I got from Walmart (The complete kit) and the filter it came with has a clear tube that you connect to it. Is this tube a necessity? What's its purpose? The filter sticks out because of this white/clear tube.

Thanks for any help,
Jonathan

Hey,
No...it's a clear tube that connects to the tube on the inside of the tank. It's like a middle piece of the filter tube. It then connects to the strainer.

-_- I just looked in my filter book to see the names of these parts so I could put them on here. This part I am talking about is called a connection tube for deeper tanks. So I guess that's what it's for...for a deeper tank....but does it really serve a purpose? If I took it off and just connected to strainer to the black intake tube, would it affect anything?

Does that make sense what I am asking? lol

Thanks,
Jonathan

Alright sounds like you can take it out, I don't have your filter but heres my description and see if it matches before following my advice. It's a tube connects to the intake on the filter(hang on back whisperish filter right) the tube is in the watter and points downward. The total intake tube will still be in the watter without it, but (heres what seems fuzzy) with it on the tube is too long touches the base of the tank so the filter hangs on an angle or is proped up higher. i've seen the kit at walmart just not in detail,

Pretty much though if this is a hob filter and the intake tube runs between the filter and the watter it'l work but it's best to be nearer to the bottom to pick up slow sinking waste, an option is too cut it, or jsut take out the removeable piece I don't see how it would make the filter stick out though unlless it's too long for the tank and hitting the bottome

hth but not sure what you talkin about

I'm guessing that you are talking about the intake tube of a hang on back filter. If it looks like an inverted letter J, with the longer part in the tank & the shorter part hooking into the filter we are on the same page. Sounds like you want to shorten the longer part of the J, making it more like a u. Only reasons I could see doing that for is if it hits the bottom of a really shallow tank or if you think the longer tube doesn't look good.

Shortening it will decrease water circulation, and every time you do a water change you will have to shut off & restart the filter. If it's an appearance thing, try putting a tall plant in front of it to hide it.

I do the opposite with mine, extend them all. Clear tubing from the hardware store works great for this.

Thanks. That is what I am talking about. It doesn't touch the bottom. I have a black background and it just sticks out...
I did put a tall plant in front of it and the filter flow would push down the plant, lol...so I guess I can just live with it.

I see now that with it being longer it can pick up more waste torward the bottom...that makes sense. I know the strainer would fit without this tube but I wanted to make sure if it would work first...
but thanks for the advice...
This filter actually works pretty good. Anytime the water is cloudy, say from a water change, the tank becomes clear pretty fast...

Thanks again,
Jonathan
