I'm just looking around at different filters online and im so confused, all the lingo is killing me. Basically looking at going ahead and buying a filter for the 3 footer, 55 gallons us, and around 196 litres i think. Which filter is best? I want to be slightly overfiltered, due to it being a planned planted tank and im afraid i might over stock, so if i over filter it i might have a little more room for error.
Anyone know of brand/model number that would be good? I would prefer a hang on , but not have any objections to a submersable canister.
:thank you:
Ok, for that type of tank, you should be looking at a canister filter (external filter). Internals hardly do the job properly, and will cause havock. A Hang on the back filter would also be a good option, just make sure you find one as big as you want it; and if you want to over filter, go the next model up or something...
Eheim produce excellent quality external filters... They run like anything, and will last for many years to come... They are generally the 'highest' quiality you can go, and even though you are paying a bit more, you sure do get quality!
I'd be looking around the eheim classic 2215 or, even the 2217? They are generally pretty good filters, or if you want to, look in the ecco range? I don't know whether this range will appeal to you, but its a good idea to have a look... They are really good for planted tanks
Fluval, people say stay away from them. Theoretically, they were generally speaking about the old series (the models like 104, 204, 304, 404). Since 2005, fluval revamped their product range, and brought the new range in (105, 205, 305, 405) and this is realistically the better of the range.
Consumers who bought the old range were complaining about gaskets blowing, and water leaking here and there. However, the new range (the ones which now carry the dvd step-by-step guide on how to set it up) have no problems what so ever, and are apparently just as good as eheims.
I'm not trying to convince you to buy the most expensive external you could buy, or the cheapest which will cause nothing but problems, but i am trying to weigh up the solutions... Give it some thought, and plenty or research, and consider the make/model you think will best suit your tank. I'd maybe look around the eheim range, and see how much a model similar to that of fluval will cost, and weigh up the pros and cons...
