Okay. So I started to cycle my 5G tank last night. At first my filter just made a low humming sound, which later became slightly 'gurgly'. Thinking this is normal? Anyway, it was like that all night but just this moment there are bubbles coming out from where the cable into the filter joins the filter itself. I have unplugged the filter as I didn't want it to explode or something

Do I need to change something in my filter or was I just overreacting and it's normal for it to do that? This is my first tank so it's all pretty new to me.

Thanks for reading X

if you've only just set it up there may be some trapped air in the filter. That is possibly why the filter is making a gurgling sound. Try unplugging it and opening it up underwater, give it a shake and hopefully that will release any of the air.

Hi,

Do you have an air supply in the tank? E.g. an air powered decoration/a stone that relieves air into the water (air stone). If so, the most likely cause is that air bubbles are being pulled through the filter and escaping by means of a tiny gap. Namely, one between the filter case and the power cable. Otherwise, have you checked the condition of the filter itself? Perhaps the impeller has shot it? Sorry for stating the obvious.

Cheers,

Luke.

Thanks for replies!

I don't have any ornaments emitting bubbles or an air stone. I would have thought the filter was fine as the guy at my LFS put it together in front of me while explaining what each bit does, and when I checked the instructions it all seemed right. Do you think maybe the cable could be loose? Should I plug it back in and just see or take it apart and put it back together?

i would first take the power head off the sponge in the water and give it a good shake turn it upside down etc to try and get any trapped air inside to come out and see if that works?

what make filter is it?

is it new?

It is a Powerbio 200 and yes, it's new. It came with the tank which is a 20l Arcadia Ark tank. I will give that a go, thanks :)
