i'm going to be getting endlers for my hex tank.
whats th best way to stop any babies, or even adult, fish getting sucked up and into the impeller??
tights over the intake?? maybe? i'll have to hunt for tights though, and how do you make them stay on the tube??

this is the tank: you can see the intake on the left hand side

tiiips??

Some LFS's sell a Bio-Sponge that fits over the intake. The only problem I've found with them is you have to take them off to clean them weekly since the larger wastes stick to their outside, they can get gunky after a while. Just rinse them in clean water and put back on. The one I have is a Penn-Plax Cascade Bio-Sponge for internal filters. Hope this helps.

i'll see if my LFS have the bio sponge as i have a lack of tights! and i don't want to cut up good ones.

hopefully be getting endlers in September (after i've been paid, so poor, so so poor)

oohh actually, i got some spare cartridges for this tank, x2, i only needed one of them for now, might try wrapping the second new sponge around the intake. (it's easy to get that thing out and wash it once a week to get any bigger particles off of it.)

are elastic bands ok in the tank? or shall i find something else?

most people use rubber bands but you can try one of the small ones that comes with a new fish or feeder shrimp. Either one will do the trick.

I cut one of the foam inserts to the Aquaclear 30 in half, put a slice in the middle of one long end, and then just slid it onto the end of the filter. I lucked out because the length of the opening on the filter tube was the exact width of the foam insert. I do need to take some time and shape it a little better - instead of being square, I'd like to round it off. This works really well, there's no rubber bands in tank (I'm allergic to latex, and besides, the cana eats them), and I've never had even a baby ghost shrimp sucked up. Stays resonably clean, even with five poo-rific snails!

hi
bit of tights & a rubber band works a treat...thats what we used to keep our yoyos out of our filter when they were small. you just have to dislodge any bits of leaf/junk every now & again so the water flow is clear but its not a big deal.

Sponges work better than screening of fabric. It diffuses the water flow better, and acts as a mechanical & biological filter, increasing your filter capacity. I've had fry get stuck with fabric or screen, never had a problem with sponge.
