I have been wondering if the pick up tube for my filter is better if it is near the bottom or in the middle of the tank. I have an extension that puts it about an inch above the sand. If I take that off, its in the middle level of the tank.

Whats everyone opinion?

Bottom seems better to me as that means that the water flow has to do all the way to the bottom before getting out of the tank. Half way would seen to offer the possibility of deal zones at the bottom?

+1.
As low as it will go, without sucking up any substrate :good:

Ah, thank you! I've got two HOBs on my 55g, one with the intake near the bottom and the other in the middle. Now that I think about it, should I just leave these as is or add an extension to the shorter one?

I think in that situation I would leave it the way you have it. That way your covering most of the tank.

That was my original thought, but after seeing the adamant comments about being on the bottom I started second guessing myself.
