Which is better? My teacher (he breads guppies) says that ground filters are much better. They have been used for many years, and they do a nice job. Mechanical Filters are prone to breaking.

What is your opinion?

If you're talking about under-gravel filters vs a power-filter it's an absolute no-brainer ->> a HOB / HOT / Power-filter (whatever you call them - Aquaclear, Penguin, Emperor, Cascade, etc) will blow an undergravel filter away. There are several people (including my discus guy) who have been running aqua-clear filters for years without failure. As for the reasons why - there are several posts on this forum on the debate...

Air pumps are just as prone to breaking as power filters. The guys I know that breed livebearers run bare tanks, with air powered sponge & box filters. One pump, runs of pvc, with at least a backup diaphragm kit, if not a spare pump.
