I'm currently in the process of cycling my new Rekord 70 and I'm using the internal filter that came with it. I noticed today that they filter doesn't seem to actually be filtering stuff. It still seems to be moving the water through the tank but its spitting all the dust (and planaria worms euch) etc right back out again. What could be causing this? I've checked to see that the filter is secured properly but I'm not 100% sure. Also will my bacteria be ok? As far as I can see its probably been like this for a few days the bacteria has been fine during that time.

Any help would be fantastic

Certainly sounds like the water has found a way past the filter media rather then through it. I'd check the setup again.

Sounds like its channeling to me, is there fish in the tank yet? or are you still cycling, if no fish, i would dismantle the filter and check the sponges are in the correct places, and all the filter parts are slotted together properly. It is likely to be a assembly problem, as it is unlikely the sponges would of got that clogged in such a short time period without any fish.

Yeah theres no fish in the tank but I've had some snails and quite a lot of planaria so it wouldn't surprise me if it was a bit clogged. The first pad in the filter is reccomeneded to be changed once a week and its been like 2 weeks and I haven't changed it but I've read that with a bit of clean they don't need changed very often at all. It seemed that some of filter was a little loose on what it was supposed to be slotted onto. I've made sure its more secure and I've turned over the top filter pad thing in case its clogged. Thanks for the advice. I'll see if the tank looks any clearer tommorow and then maybe try something else if its not.

dont change the pads!!!

that is a scam to get more money - simply wash it in tank water to preseve the bacteria

check all your media if any are clogged up. that usually stopped my internal juwel filter. also make sure the power head is in the right direction i guess. the white part of the filter should get the bits.

AGREE! don't change pads ! there are too many good bacteria growing in there! and changes will mean you will have to wait for a few more weeks

I don't change anything in my filter for at least 3 months. Actually the pads in one of my filters is 8 months old!!!!!!! All I did was rinse it off and it was as good as new. Saves you money and is better for your fish, as long as the filter retains it's filtering ability.
