Can you switch the filter off at night if you have one of the big built-in ones - it would be far more convenient for me.

No dont switch off it will kill all the bacteria that live within the media and help with cleaning your water from ammonia and nitrite etc. :X

If you stop the water flow through the filter media the bacteria will starve of oxygen and die off causing a problem with your water quality. :/

What filter do you have?
They shouldnt really make any noise unless there's air inside or there's a problem with the motor / impeller

The sound is a low hum, probably caused by vibrations going through the table - has anyone else had this problem? (the filter just says it is a 'juwell filter system', voo)

Mines a rio 125 and i have the same problem, its a deep huming sound...

Thanks for the advice, but I just moved it to a different table which brought the vibrations to the floor better - no noise! Maybe you could try this, corrosive, unless you have quite a small tank.

Well with my 6g tank on my window sill(sp?) my fluval 2 is silent, and i can get away with leaving my other filter on because the tanks below my mums bedroom HEHE.

Hmmmm....polystyrene....we tried two towels underneath, and it still made the noise. Maybe polystyrene would work, if it was thick enough.

you soon get used to the noise, we've tanks on our bedside table's and a 30g about a metre away from the end of the bed. I went on holiday recently and it was soo wierd getting to sleep without the sound of water and filters!! always wake up needing the loo though
