Filter Media

I am not sure if this matters or not, but what order should the 3 types of media (biological, chemical, and mechanical) be placed in filter. I am thinking of a DIY kind of filter and would like to use all three but am not sure how to set them up. Is it just personal preference or is there a speciic way?

Any help would be great!

From the bottom up...

Mechanical (sponge)
Chemical (carbon)
Biological (ceramic rings perhaps?)

In my case, I use two sponges instead of the carbon insert; one never knows when he'll need a sponge in a hurry.
