when changing the sponge in your filter is it better to leave the new sponge in the water for a while to gather bacteria or put it in the filter and leave the old sponge in the water for a while till the new one gathers sufficent bacteria

Do you have room in your filter to run both sponges for a while until the new one becomes populated with the 'friendly' bacteria ? :look:

yeah if you can then put them both in together, even if you just cut half the old one and sqeeze it in with the new it's better than nothing.

This is why filters with more compartments are better as you can change the media gradually.

not enough room so ill try the cut in half job shoulb be ok thanks for the replies
 
Why are you changing it, may I ask? You should only really change filter sponge once it is literally falling apart.



yeah m8 its been in there a brave while and there is a few tears and cuts on it from cleaning it its a fluvel 3 filter one of the older 1s
