When people talk about filter media, I always assumed the media was the sponges. From reading a few posts, people are talking about filter sponges and filter media. All I seem to have in my filter is the sponges and the plastic bit that holds them in place. Should I have something else? What is the filter media if it's not the sponges.

I have a Juwel Rekord 120 and the filter has 5 different types of sponges. Top is white filter floss, then black carbon, then a coarse green one, the a coarse blue one and finally a fine blue one at the bottom.

Am I being stupid or am I missing something?

hi bex,
in the juwel system the sponges and your carbon are all the media you need.
i change my white filter floss once a week when i do a water change.other filters use all types of media but yours has everything it needs :) . all the best donna.

Thank you very much! I was starting to wory that I'd been stitched up when we bought it! Feel a bit daft asking these questions but it's best to know and we all start somewhere!

when your filter starts to backflow just rinse it out in some tank water after a water change...don't use tap water....oh and if you don't know backflow is when the water pours out around the intake tube rather than out through the filter media like it's supposed to
