Hi all, I'm new to the forum but not new to aquariums. I just purchased a 55gal and a fluval 304. I am curious on how changing the filter media effects the tank. I need some suggestions on what type of media to put in the compartments and how it will effect the water. I have always used the side mounted filters in the past(the ones w/ the slide out filter w/ carbon inside)

Obviously I will put some starter fish in first.
I am planning on putting a variety of African cichlid's in the tank if it matters.

Thanks!

Sounds like a good tank,

Bascically:

You need
sponge- surface for benficial bacteria and mechanical filtration
some biomedia - fluval sells biomax and it works fine- surface for benficial bacteria

Optional is:
Carbon - chemical filtration, disposes of toxins and helps water colour/clarity
Filter Floss - polishes watter, usefull biologically and mechanically
Buffering subtsances -crushed coral(up ph), argonite(up ph), peat(down ph) - buffers, mechanical, and biological,
Amonia remover - chemical filtration helps remove toxins

I use sponge, carbon, filter floss, and biomax, in all my powerfilters, in my african tank I also have "african cichlid gravel"(this is barely useful not something you will likely need)

Maybe try a fishless cycle there is information on it in the FAQ's section it is cheaper, quicker, and easier then useing fish you will be also able to add all your cichlds at the same time which is a big plus
