Can anyone tell me what that white padding/filter media is made of? And in particular whether it could possibly be dangerous for nipping fishes? Am thinking of seeding my semi-matured tank with good bacteria from my present filter medias' padding, to fast-track the process.

Some are made from synthetic materials but I'm not sure what brand you are refering to.

Hagen Aqua clear is made from plastic-I wouldn't eat it.

Am I missing something here :dunno:

why would you want to eat filter media?

I honestly don't think the fish will want to eat the filter media-just the algea/what ever in/on it.
If they have already concumed it and you are worried then just hope for the best.

Thought I'd better see what the responses were before passing a decision. I've seen my fishes nipping at a variety of tank implements, so just playing 'safe'. I hope.

The last thing I'd want them to have is indigestible fibres 'balling' up in their intestines, gills etc.

Would it work to put it in a knee high nylon and then put that in there?

It isn't toxic if the fish eat it..HOWEVER,it can and most often will bind them up ...my chocolate ate some.. I had to net him,hold him and use tweezers to pull it from his ass every few days...

let me just say

EW..lol

but binding could have killed him,so it had to be done.

Putting it in a net bag or nylon will work fine.

I put ceramic rings in nylons and soak a few weeks in a mature tank so I can jump start a new tank.
