I have a second hand filter which came with the tank.
It has media in it, in the form of a lump of spongey stuff - 70mm x 33mm x 25mm but nothing else.
It's an Aquael FAT-mini rated at 250 litres per hour. The tank is 70 litres, so it has approx 3.5 times turnover. I have read that I should have atleast 5 times turnover, so I presume it is underspecced for the tank and that really I need a minimum of 350 litres per hour.
I have been told I should start with fresh media - do you all agree? Is it just sponge I need? Any particular density etc?
If I get another filter, do I just get a 350 or 400 litre per hour to replace it, or would it be a good idea to save money and just get another cheaper 250 litre one, and run both? I was thinking that would give more surface aggitation, and one could be at either end, and it would be a bit of a failsafe if one failed?
