OK READ THIS..

Maintenance:
Filter cartridges should be rinsed regularly (at least every 2-4 weeks.
If the red Clogging Indicator is raised, immediate maintenance is required.
To remove debris without affecting the established biological balance, use aquarium water to rinse media (never rinse directly in aquarium).
To ensure maximum filtering efficiency, foam pads and carbon/polyester cartridges should be replaced every 4-6 weeks.

Filter Maintenance:
Always unplug power filter prior to cleaning.
Remove cover, filter cartridges and discard water remaining in the filter case.
Thoroughly rinse collected debris from the case and impeller assembly in clear, lukewarm water.
The Adjustable Intake Stem can be cleaned with a filter stem brush to remove any buildup of deposits.
When all parts have been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, reassemble filter and reposition on aquarium.
Restart and re-prime filter as when first set up.

should i rinse the cartridges with tap water? would it really effect it?

the bar is raised on my filter which means it needs maintenance
how should i do this?

You may find sometimes that your question can't be answered within 17 minutes :p Be patient...

First off, yes, you need to use tank water. Read up on the cycling process - those essential bacteria (just like fish) don't like chlorine which is present in tap water (which is why you need a de-chlorinator).

What I do is, every other week, while I'm doing my water change, I take my filter media out and put it in the bucket into which I syphon tank water. I rinse the media out in there - then I return it to the tank and filter.

You never, BTW, need to change your filter media. If you ever do, replace it one bit at a time or else you'll get an ammonia spike and lots of dead fish.

ok so get a bucket put some tank water in it...and rinse out the cartridges?
