I'm setting up my fluval roma 240 and I've just fitted the external filter and looked into how to maintain it when I realised I don't know how to disconnect the filter to clean it without all of the water coming out of the under tank connection can anyone with the same thing tell me how to do it please?

The grey lever on the 407 is flow control. Parallel with the floor is wide open, perpendicular is off. If you raise it all the way up like it is in your image then flow will be off. Then you raise the red lever to disconnect the hoses from the filter for maintenance.

Fluval advise close the shut off lever first then quickly remove power, this helps maintain the suction. And always lubricate the seal before refitting the pump unit, a light vegetable oil works or Vaseline.

BTW you seem to have paper under your tank, probably needs a pukka support mat.
