As it says really - I'm having a struggle with the filter intake. It does its job very well and the intake grill is often covered with bits of plant and stuff but how to clean it? If I turn the filter off all the gunk falls off cos the suction is gone. If I use my vac the vac tube gets too clogged up and the water stops flowing. As the tank is 2 feet deep my arms arent long enough to hold a net over the end then switch the filter off

Anyone got any bright ideas??

I bought a length of plastic tube from the LFS, which fits into some hose... I use this to syphon the mess off the sand - the rigid plastic part is easier to handle than the hose, and allows dry hands ! You could suck the stuff from the inlet with something similar (filter off)

what about having a fish net handy beside you when you have gunk coming back out? Might be an idea, but also a water change will be the best option. At least you know it would be clean :)
