Hello everyone,

I have bought a tropicl tank for my son for xmass. the filter has bio balls in it what are these and will i need to add anything else to treat the water when cycling.

Also do i have to get rid of the chlorine before i put the water in the tank.

Cheers Will :S

Welcome to the forum,
Bio balls, are Simplay balls that hold the bacteria used in bio filtration...
As you mention cycleing i`m going to asume that you understans the nitrogen cycle, and the importance of the bacteria in the filter

Chlorine is harmfull to bacteria, and so muct be romved from water when doing water changes

Also do i have to get rid of the chlorine before i put the water in the tank.
Use something like Tetra AquaSafe.

It works almost instantly and can therefore be added to the water prior to pouring in or afterwards (straight into the tank). It is very difficult to overdose on (safe I think up to over 20 times the recommended dose). It is not the cheapest of things, but BY FAR (by a factor of HALF of the next cheapest price from anywhere else I've seen) is from here: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/

It is a common product and most pet shops that deal with aqauria will deal with it. An even cheaper alternative is to use pond dechlorinators instead but I have no experience of using these products.... Anyone?

Hope this helps,

Andy
