Can anyone recommend a filter for a 29 litre tank. I have an internal one that isnt any good and want to use the tank for a few ember tetras or a betta.

Any advice much appreciated.

I have had good luck with the AquaClear filters. I use an AquaClear 30 on my 20 gallon, AquaClear 70 on my 60. I like them because I don't have to use filter cartridges. I believe they have a 50 version as well, though depending on your stocking you might be able to use a 30. They can generate a bit of current but you can reduce the flow to about 60% of max. I use a sponge pre-filter with small fish. Summary AquaClear 50 for heavy stocking, AquaClear 30 for light stocking.

I would also suggest looking at canister filters, but I don't have as much experience with them.

Good catch. I saw Liters but thought Gallons. I am a little old school. I agree about the smaller size, a 50 on 29 liters would have the betta doing laps around the tank.

You could also get a small air powered sponge filter.

Bettas need a filter with a gentle flow.
I used an air powered sponge filter in my 25 litre betta tank for some time. Now it's a shrimp tank and I have an Eheim Pickup 45 - the media is just sponge and the flow rate and direction can be adjusted. Before the sponge filter I used the smallest of Maidenhead Aquatics Aqua Internal filters, but I threw away the carbon in the hollow in the sponge. It has an adjustable flow rate as part of the mini spray bar.
The downside to this filter is that the suckers can't be removed when they go rigid.

Hi BK, keep your existing filter healthy by not cleaning too often, however if it really is too small, you’ll need a flow of about 500 litres per hour for your size tank. The Fluval 107 Canister is right sized, just make sure you keep the existing filter running, whilst the External filter matures - about three months. PJ

A flow rate of 500 litres per hour is a turnover of 17 times the tank volume per hour. This is ridiculously high especially for a betta which needs a slow water flow. I would not recommend 17 times turnover even for fish like hillstream loaches.
