I have a hidom h-235 15L tank and it came with:

White filter pad
Blue foam
Black foam

The black foam has started to fall apart when cleaned lots of black bits are falling off.

My question is can i remove this and replace it with something else?

Here's the stock filters.

the black foam is likely to be carbon and in my experience of carbon it is normal to see bits coming off it. The carbon is only really needed if you are trying to remove things like medication from the tank. My advice would be to replace the black for another blue one but try and do it gradually as replacing filter media can result in a cycle crash. Is there a way to replace the black for blue but still be able to cram the black in somewhere even if it's in several pieces? I'm not familiar with this filter

Can i replace it with other media rather than foam? The filter is in two compartments at the back.

I'm not familiar with this filter at all and so not familiar with it's design. It may be that it's designed to only work on foam/sponge. You could try adding a few ceramics and see if it changes anything. Beware for it making any un-usual noises if you do this. If it does take them out and stick with sponges.

I have two external JBL filters on my tank. When I got the first one over 3 years ago now this filter was fairly new to the market. The media was 50% ceramic and 50% sponge. Last year I bought another - exactly the same size as the first one and it had been updated. This one is 25% ceramic and 75% sponge. JBL had re-designed it to run mostly on sponge. JBL are a German company and they are constantly upgrading and researching. By changing this filter from 50/50 to 25/75 my guess is research has shown sponge works better .... but that's just what I've taken from the changes.

Good luck with it, what ever you decide to do remember to only change media when it's falling apart so you don't end up having to re-cycle it :)
